Halifax libraries join nationwide movement towards free menstrual products – Halifax

Public library branches in Halifax will present free menstrual merchandise in washrooms, as the town considers distributing them totally free in any respect municipal amenities.

Asa Kachan, chief librarian and CEO for Halifax Public Libraries, says the 14 branches have been discreetly offering the merchandise for years to patrons who requested for them.

Kachan says they’ve determined to supply dignity for anybody who discovered the necessity to ask a barrier, by placing the merchandise in washrooms.

She says it’s about assembly a necessity when not everybody can afford to buy menstrual merchandise.

Halifax councillor Lorelei Nicoll moved a movement final month asking metropolis workers to discover the distribution of free menstrual merchandise like tampons and pads at amenities reminiscent of neighborhood centres, swimming pools, and arenas.

Nicoll says she hopes the thought is now seen as a “no brainer,” given the libraries’ initiative.
