Mr Grayling stated: “The business remained of the view till the final second that it could have the ability to ship these modifications.

“As few as three weeks earlier than the timetable was to be carried out, GTR knowledgeable me personally they had been able to implement the modifications.”

Labour’s Lilian Greenwood, chair of the Transport Committee, stated the Division for Transport had “signed off GTR’s unworkable timetable proposals within the face of Community Rail opposition”, and rejected proposals for the phased introduction of the brand new schedules.

In distinction to his fellow Brexiteer, Michael Gove, Mr Grayling invoked “consultants” in his defence.

Exterior the chamber, the RMT common secretary, Mick Money, stated: “That is simply the standard stream of sizzling air, damaged guarantees and buck passing that now we have come to anticipate from Chris Grayling and nobody believes a single phrase of it.

“I problem the transport secretary to return and be part of a few of my members on the sharp finish dealing with abuse and threats whereas the providers he’s liable for collapse into chaos.

“The one resolution to the present shambles is to sack these ineffective non-public operators and return Britain’s rail providers to public possession.

“If there was a World Cup for whole and abject failure they wouldn’t even hassle having a event. They’d simply give Chris Grayling the trophy and ship everybody else dwelling.”

Henry Smith, the Tory member for Crawley, name-checked Three Bridges and Ifield, whereas Mohammad Yasin, Labour MP for Bedford, elicited a promise that one thing can be executed to “ease the strain on Bedford”.

One other Conservative, Maria Caulfield, set on a department line from her constituency, Lewes, to Polegate, Seaford and Newhaven.

On a nationwide degree, Andy McDonald, the shadow transport secretary, accused Mr Grayling of being “asleep on the wheel”.

“The travelling public and the rail business don’t have any religion on this transport secretary to repair the state of affairs.

“Had been the prime minister not so enfeebled, she would sack him.

“If he had any idea of duty, he would resign.”

Shiki-Shima: The world’s most luxurious practice?

Mr Grayling’s constant theme, although, was that the practice operators had been accountable. “Neither Northern nor GTR had a transparent fallback plan.”

It stays to be seen if the transport secretary has one.
